Reasons Why You Should Have an Autumn/Winter Photoshoot

I know for a fact that that majority of people would want a photoshoot in the spring/summer. Of course it’s warm(er), everything is green and lush, and there is generally an increased chance of sunshine (because lets be real, we live in England). So why would you want a shoot during winter in the cold when you and your horse or dog could be basking in the warmth of summer in the middle of a meadow whilst having your photo taken? Well, there’s quite a few reasons why actually.

I know that generally the weather gets worse during the colder months, especially here in the UK, but that should not be an excuse to miss out on all of the wonderful reasons why you should be taking an advantage of booking an autumn/winter shoot!

So here are a couple of reasons why I think you should have a shoot in the colder months:

Autumn

  • Plain and simple. Autumn, along with spring is defiantly my favourite season! Mother nature has given life to the world during summer, and when autumn comes everything begins to wilt and die, which is actually quite a morbid thought, but somehow nature makes it beautiful!

  • Trees are set alight with colours of red, yellow and orange and carpets of crunchy leaves take over the ground which makes the most stunning setting for a shoot! These warm colours also make a change from the vibrant green landscapes in summer shoots, which gives a different feel to the images altogether.

Golden Hour

  • Ahh golden hour! My favourite time of day! That wonderful hour early morning and just before sunset that casts a gold blanket across the landscape and filters through the tree canopies. This dreamy hour of light gives such a magical touch to images, you’ll want to relive the moment all over again!
  • Sunrises and sunsets link in with golden hour and are defiantly the best times of day to be shooting as the sun is lower in the sky, creating a softer light. AND unlike summer sun, which is a lot brighter and harsher, winter sun smoothes your skin and is overall a lot more flattering!
  • Plus since the days are shorter and darkness comes around a lot quicker you do not have to worry about getting up ridiculously early or waiting till 8 or 9pm for the best light, which makes the lives of everyone involved so much easier!

Winter Weather

Do not be fooled by this heading!

Even though winter is usually very wet and cold, there are other types of weather that occur during this season that can create a very different affect to your images!

  • Fog and mist can give a more eery and dramatic effect, which can make amazing halloween themed shoots, if that’s your thing. But in the mornings or evenings when the sunshine filters through the low cloud, you’ll feel as if your in a dream! Plus if there is a beautiful sunset when it is misty it creates the most beautiful silhouette images!

  • Frost, the cold, sparkling crystals that turns grass into diamonds and branches into chandeliers. Who wouldn’t want to have that as their backdrop for a photoshoot? Plus if you get the mornings sunshine as well, you will witness one of natures many natural beauties.
  • Snow! Of course snow if probably one of the most unpredictable weather types when it comes to living in the UK, but waking up to snowflake sewn cape covering the entire landscape is something magical! And having a winter wonderland as your backdrop for a shoot is a rare but enchanting experience!

So, there are some reasons that I hope will shine a little sunshine on your dreary thoughts about autumn/winter shoots. There are so many reasons why this time of year is wonderful for photographs, and it’s something that not enough people take advantage of!

So next time you are wanting to book a shoot, don’t dismiss the colder months, despite the mud and temperature drop, you may come out with something even more wonderful than you could have imagined!
